How Often Should You Clean Solar Panels on the Central Coast?

Most Central Coast solar panels should be cleaned every 6 months, ideally once in spring and once in late summer. The dry season runs roughly May through October, so dust, pollen and bird droppings build up with no rain to rinse them. Panels near farms, dirt roads or the coast may need cleaning more often.

Why do Central Coast solar panels get so dirty?

The Central Coast gets most of its rain in winter. Through the long dry season, dust from fields, vineyards and dirt roads settles on panels, along with spring pollen and bird droppings. Coastal arrays also collect a light salt film. All of it blocks some of the sunlight the cells need.

Doesn't rain clean solar panels?

Rain helps, but it rarely finishes the job. Light rain can turn dust into a muddy film that dries along the bottom edge of each panel, and bird droppings and pollen stick through most showers. The first winter rain also comes after months of dry buildup.

How often should you clean solar panels where you live?

Every 6 months works for most homes in San Luis Obispo County and northern Santa Barbara County. Arrays near farm fields, vineyards, gravel driveways or busy roads often need cleaning every 3 to 4 months in summer. A good check is your monitoring app: if output drops on clear days compared with the same month last year, the panels are probably dirty.

How should solar panels be cleaned?

High Tide Window Cleaning cleans solar panels and frames with soft-bristle brushes and deionized water, which dries without leaving mineral spots. High-pressure washing can scratch the glass and force water past the seals, which is why it’s not used. Solar panel cleaning costs $12 per panel, plus an access charge for steep or second-story roofs.
