How Often Should You Clean Windows Near the Ocean?

Homes within a mile or two of the ocean should have exterior windows cleaned every 4 months. Salt spray dries on glass as a hazy mineral film, and left for a year or more it can start to etch the surface. Inland homes on the Central Coast usually need cleaning every 6 months.

What does salt air do to windows?

Ocean wind carries tiny droplets of salt water. When they land on glass and the water evaporates, the salt stays behind as a thin, cloudy film. Morning marine layer adds more moisture, so the film builds quickly on the ocean-facing side of homes in Shell Beach, Pismo Beach, Avila Beach, Morro Bay and Cayucos.
A fresh salt film wipes off. The problem is time: minerals that sit on glass through repeated wet and dry cycles can bond to the surface and leave etching that cleaning can’t fully remove.

How often should coastal homes clean their windows?

Every 4 months is the schedule High Tide Window Cleaning recommends for homes that face the ocean or sit close to the beach. That’s three cleanings a year, often timed for spring, late summer and before the holidays.
Homes a few miles inland, like most of San Luis Obispo and Arroyo Grande, can usually stretch to every 6 months. North County homes in Paso Robles and Atascadero deal with dust instead of salt and do well on the same 6-month schedule.

Why clean the screens, tracks and sills too?

Salt and sand collect in window tracks and screens. If only the glass gets cleaned, the next wind or rain pulls that grit back onto the window. High Tide Window Cleaning scrubs frames, tracks, sills and screens on every visit, which is a big reason coastal glass stays clear longer between cleanings.

Is a window cleaning plan worth it on the coast?

For a 4-month schedule, a plan usually makes sense. The High Tide window plan takes $50 off every visit, so three visits a year saves $150, and the crew puts you on the calendar so you don’t have to remember. Plans run on a signed agreement, with the card on file billed after each visit and free touch-ups for up to a week.
